Stephen’s future just got even brighter. As the lucky winner of ABLEnow’s recent $10,000 contribution promotion—held in honor of the 10th anniversary of the ABLE Act—he and his family now have even more resources to help him live a full and independent life.
Born with Down Syndrome, Stephen currently receives Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and Medicaid. His father opened his ABLEnow account in 2019 after learning about the savings program through the Down Syndrome Association of Hampton Roads. They saw it as an opportunity save for Stephen’s future without jeopardizing his eligibility for critical benefits.
“The ABLEnow account was created to make it easier for someone like Stephen to accrue money and not lose sleep over fear that the account will make him ineligible for much-needed services and support,” said Steven’s father, Kevin.
With their recent $10,000 prize, the family is excited to expand Stephen’s opportunities. Whether it’s traveling to visit his brother, making a trip to Walt Disney World, or simply enjoying the freedom to go out to dinner or buy a birthday gift for a friend, these funds will help Stephen maintain his independence and enjoy life on his own terms.
And Stephen is certainly making the most of life! He’s an actor in a local adaptive play group and a passionate Special Olympics athlete competing in tennis, volleyball, and basketball. Stephen is the CEO of his own nonprofit, where he builds and sells bluebird houses to benefit charity. At home, he’s part of a lively “grumble” of three rescue pugs, who keep the family entertained.
With the help of ABLEnow—and his recent big win—Stephen’s future is full of possibilities. His family’s hope is simple: that he continues to lead an active life, free to pursue his passions without limitations.
